Viewing a class office in the light, not of a reward, but of a position demanding the exercise of influence for the good of the class, our present method does not hold forth much promise for the future. Each Freshman class entering Harvard is alarmingly larger than the one preceding it. It takes each class longer to get together and find itself. The chance of electing not merely the best, but even good officers, grows less as the class becomes more disintegrated. The possibility of making mistakes Freshman year, however, would not give such cause for apprehension, were it possible to rectify these mistakes in subsequent years. And from present indications it would seem that a mistake in the election of officers will be very prejudicial to the interests of the class. As the tendency of undergraduates to grow apart from each other in pursuit of their various interests increases, every effort should be made to draw them together again. This is what the Union will try to effect, and what the Freshman beer-nights are attempting. The success of these efforts, and of such others as are likely to be made, depends to a great extent on the officers as the logical embodiment of the spirit of the class. The necessity of being able to make reparation for ill chosen elections Freshman year bids fair to become of greater and greater importance. The custom of electing class officers for the entire college course seems, therefore, unsatisfactory both from a standpoint sentimental, if you like, and from a standpoint eminently practical. The remedy is obvious. The system of making officers ineligible for re-election, at least until Senior year, obtains in nearly every other college in the United States, and would to a great extent obviate ...
